Vinyl shake siding is effective, versatile, and looks great.

What is Shake Siding?

Shakes and shingles are different animals, even though you may hear both words used interchangeably. That’s not surprising since they look similar, and are both elements that serve as siding.

Here’s the difference: a wooden shake is split along the grain off of a larger piece of wood, whereas shingles are sawn at both ends. Consequently, shakes follow the grain of the wood and are less even than shingles. This manufacturing process lends shakes a more varied texture that gives homes an interesting and distinctly rustic appearance.

Why Vinyl?

Because of their natural unevenness, wooden shakes weather and wear irregularly over time, and they’re vulnerable to moisture damage. Vinyl shakes and shingles aren’t. Made from a chemically inert material, vinyl shake siding provides all the aesthetic and protective benefits that wooden shake siding can, and has few of the drawbacks.

Vinyl is More Versatile than Wood

Since it’s a man-made material, vinyl siding can be made in almost any color, texture, and style. While it’s often made in a way to imitate the appearance of natural wood, this is by no means a necessity. Phil Beaulieu & Sons offers materials in a wide variety of colors and styles both natural-looking and not. It’s also easily shaped and produced, so vinyl can easily be made to match with your home’s existing architectural elements.

What Vinyl Shake Siding Can Do for your Home

In the heat of summer, light-colored siding reflects the sun’s rays away, keeping your home cool, and in the dead of winter, the extra layer of insulation between the interior of your home and freezing temperatures outside cuts down your heating bill. In climates like ours in Western Massachusetts where we experience both temperature extremes, that’s an important function.

Another functional purpose of siding is to protect your home from damage caused by the elements, especially wind and water. Installing and repairing siding is much cheaper than repairing the walls and frame underneath – and as the outermost part of your home, siding occasionally needs repair. Vinyl is an incredibly durable siding material that can survive environmental stress better than most kinds of wood, and it’s usually cheaper.
